Guest Post: The Inherited Author, Freedom Matthews

I am really looking forward to being able to read this book! I love pirates, romance, AND female leads. So this one is a no-brainer. I also got to ask the author, Freedom Matthews, a question about her inspiration.

Your book has fantasy, romance and magic. What do you think are some of the books you’ve read that really get you excited, inspire your work?

The books that really inspired Inherited and the Curses of VIII series as whole are:

The Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier and The Assassin's Apprentice series by Robin Hobb.

These books are adult folktales with high fantasy elements and a huge story arc. Although I know I have a long way to go before I am anywhere near these wonderful author’s world building and storytelling skills, I absorbed their stories and have gained so much from reading them. I have always been a fan of bittersweet folk tales and these are the pinnacle in the genre, in my opinion.

Other books I read whilst writing Inherited are: The Twilight Saga, The Morganville Vampires, The Wicked Series, The Ink Trilogy, House of Night series, among others. I think every book we read inspires us in some ways and I feel these books have created a literary pathway throughout my formative writing years.  I feel the wider and more ferociously I read, the more I learn… it’s a process that I will continue to learn and grown from.

There you have it folks... the wisest thing that has come out of an author's mouth all day:  "The wider and more ferociously I read, the more I learn."

Too true, Ms. Matthews. Too true.
